Additional Specifications

Grip-Rite® drywall screws come in several variations to meet the specific requirements of your drywall project:

  • Shank style: Choose between fine thread drywall screws for light gauge metal studs and coarse thread drywall screws for secure attachment to wood studs.
  • Size options:  Drywall screws are available in a range of lengths — from 1-¼ to 4 inches — to accommodate various drywall thicknesses and applications.

Drywall Screw Installation Tips

Choosing the proper drywall screw length, gauge and thread is critical for achieving the best results.

Recommendations for lengths are as follows:

  • 1-¼-inch or 1-⅝-inch screws for ½-inch drywall
  • 1-⅝-inch or 2-inch screws for ⅝-inch drywall
  • 1-inch to 1-¼-inch screws for ¼-inch drywall

Fine threads provide precise, self-threading penetration for a secure and stable hold without damaging metal framing, while coarse, wider threads deliver strong holding power for wood substrates.

A #6 gauge screw is ideal for most metal and wood applications. A thicker #8 gauge offers extra holding power for older or more challenging wood substrates.

Drywall Screws vs. Drywall Nails

Both drywall screws and nails offer reliable fastening solutions for gypsum drywall in different scenarios:

  • Drywall screws: Many professionals prefer drywall screws due to superior holding strength, reduced risk of nail pops and ability to adjust depth precisely. Grip-Rite® screws feature bugle heads that seat flush, providing a smooth, professional finish.
  • Drywall nails: Nails offer faster, simpler installation and create smooth divots that are ideal for filling in with drywall compound afterward.

Grip-Rite® offers both drywall screws and drywall nails, allowing you to select the ideal fastening solution for your specific project needs.

FAQ

Get answers to some common questions about drywall screws before you buy.

Which type of drywall screw should I use for my project?

Choose phosphate-coated, #6 gauge 1-¼ inch coarse thread drywall screws when attaching ½ inch drywall to wood studs. You may use a 1-⅝-inch for superior grip.

For drywall installations onto metal studs, select #6 gauge 1-¼ inch fine thread drywall screws for better thread engagement and a secure hold.

We recommend the longer 1-⅝-inch drywall screw for attaching drywall to ceilings.

Why should I use a drywall screw instead of a normal screw?

Drywall screws have bugle heads and deeper threads that securely grip drywall without tearing or damaging the paper surface. Regular screws lack these features and may not hold drywall securely, leading to loose panels and potential surface damage.

Should I use a drywall anchor with drywall screws?

Use drywall anchors when hanging heavy objects or when no stud is behind the surface. Anchors provide extra support that helps distribute the weight and prevent the screw from pulling out.

Why are drywall screws black?

Drywall screws are black due to their phosphate coating, which provides corrosion resistance and improved adhesion of drywall mud.
