Backer boards and underlayment are essential in spaces where moisture is a concern. Bathrooms, kitchens, and mud rooms all need a water-resistant support structure behind the tile to prevent mold, mildew, and decay.
Traditionally made from portland cement embedded with fiberglass, backer boards are heavy and require chemical additives and coatings to repel water. Alternatives with a foam core are lighter but brittle and prone to breakage.

Magnesium oxysulfate cement (MOS) is a mineral-based cement that’s lightweight and durable. It’s easier on the environment due to low carbon emissions during processing and no volatile organic compounds (VOCs), contributing to a healthier home.
With energy-efficient production, no quartz silica dust, and low heat transfer, it easily outperforms traditional cement backer boards. It’s also resistant to most environmental factors that damage conventional cement.

MORE has a similar installation process to traditional solutions. It’s easy to cut and doesn’t require special tools for round or complex shapes. You’ll need a carbide-tipped scoring knife and a straight edge to work with this product. Simply score and snap for a dust-free, clean edge without the need for going outdoors.

On average, our magnesium oxysulfate-base cement boards are 28% lighter than other leading cement boards*. Typically, a contractor can install our backer board without assistance. While foam backer boards are lighter, they lack the flexural and impact strength of Grip-Rite MORE™. You’ll experience less breakage than with a conventional cement board.

Backer board and underlayment products are typically installed where they’ll likely be exposed to water or heat. MORE is fire-resistant, with zero flame or smoke spread in the ASTM E84/UL 723 testing standard. The material also shows less than .01 inches of moisture movement under ASTM C1185.
Grip-Rite MORE™ board uses a high-strength fiberglass mesh integrated into the MOS cement for unmatched performance. It’s impact-resistant and won’t snap under conditions other boards can’t handle.
