Plastic Cap Nails – FAQs

What Are Plastic Cap Nails & What Are They Used for? 

Also known as roof cap nails, these nails are most commonly used for roofing underlayment, but they are also used as cap nails for house wraps, which help keep moisture and rain out and insulate the building. The plastic disk around the head is the feature that differentiates these nails from regular roofing nails. This plastic disk provides protection and increases the surface area under the nail head. 

It can be challenging to roll out the underlayment and shingles all at once, often exposing parts of the felt for some time. This exposure, especially in windy areas, can cause tears or rip the underlayment off. With regular roofing nails, the heads are smaller, so they can easily tear through. A plastic cap roofing nail helps to spread the load and reduces the risk of tearing. 

Roofing nails with a plastic cap also provide water resistance, protecting the felt wrap or insulation they’re nailing down.
